When Helen Keller was 19 months old she contracted an illness that left her blind and deaf. When she was ten, she began working with the brilliant teacher Anne Sullivan, who taught her to communicate by spelling words on the palm of her hand.
Later, Helen was able to receive religious instruction from the eminent clergyman and educator, Phillips Brooks. As he told her about God and the One who gave his life for her, she said something quite interesting: “I knew about God before you told me, only I didn’t know his name.”
There are many people in the world today who know about God — they sense his presence, they can even understand something of his nature — but they don’t know who he is. It’s our job (and our privilege) to tell them.
Or better, to show them.
Do you want those around to know about the God we serve? Do you want them to believe you when you say that he is loving and good and merciful? Then show them his love and mercy and goodness. Do you want them to believe you when you say that he can make a difference in their lives? Then show them the difference he has made in your life.
I believe that the God of the Bible is the God everyone is looking for. I believe that everyone, in the deepest part of them, has a sense of his presence. But they do not know his name, and they do not know he is real — that is, until we tell them and show them.
“Now what you worship as something unknown, I am going to proclaim to you.” (Acts 17:23)
